Notan means the dark-light principal of design in Japanese.
It is however much more than that.
It is the interaction of light ( positive) and
dark (negative) space
. Positive and negative spaces make the whole. In Notan
these elements are balanced and do not conflict.
They do not negate or dominate each other and
relate in harmony.
In my years of designing and art making, Notan has been
a useful tool that goes along with value studies and
composition. Teaching
this concept has been exciting for other artists to
grasp and has strengthened their composition.
It is an very approachable concept and easy to
integrate with your own art making methods.
Once you understand Notan, you see it everywhere
and can use it everywhere, like gardening, poster
making, sign design, decorating, quilt designs, drawing
and painting.
In
this two day workshop participants will do many hands on
exercises to experience the design elements of symmetry,
asymmetry, positive/negative shapes, control of positive
negative shape, values and construction of tension and
elements of design. This all sounds very complicated,
though taught this way is very simple.
To date my students really enjoy this concept
with much success.
